INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION

// THE BIG BLUE : SEE ME

Date: July - September 2013

Location: New York, USA

Project: International Exhibition

Partners: Angel Orensanz Foundation for Contemporary Art, See Me Studios

Artist: Jack Davis

We are delighted to have secured the inclusion of Jack Davis’ work, The Big Blue, in See Me’s The Story of the Creative international exhibition at the Angel Orensanz Art Center.

Davis’ practice explores the notion of man shaping the landscape and the opposing tensions this creates. Through the physical act of engagement with sheet metal, Davis hand-bends his large sculptural works into unique responses directly influenced by time and place, offering a site-responsive outcome with each piece.

Davis initiates a dialogue between himself and the hardware, exploring its limitations and strengths. Like a tug of war between material and artist, a trace of a movement and engagement is everlasting. Contradicting our perception of materials, Davis turns steel into soft flowing forms that intrigue and demand the viewer to ask paradoxical questions.

Originally made and sited in a derelict lifeboat station at Lizard Point (the most southerly end of the United Kingdom), the isolated location was sought for its intersection between the natural and man-made worlds. The Big Blue will now traverse the Atlantic and be shown in New York. The sculpture is one of only four 3D works to be included in the New York show. The work will also be featured in a digitally projected billboard, Art Takes Times Square.
